Tech & Admin FAQs

Do my credits expire?

You can use your credits to book classes as far into the future as you want. There is no limitation to which classes you can book with your credits. The validity of credits only refers to the time by which the booking needs to be made. Once you received a credit you have one whole month to use it to book any class you want. Also, if you cancel a class 72 hours before it takes place during the validity of the credits you will immediately receive the credit back.

You can see the validity of your credits under “Credits”. When booking a class the system always automatically uses the credits with the shortest validity left.

What is “Fun & Practice”?

The “Fun & Practice” level is designed to help students to speak, practice and have fun while gaining confidence in speaking Mandarin.

LTL stands for “Live the Language” and that is what we are all about. In our experience practicing and applying what you learned is just as important as studying itself. Mandarin is a language that needs to be spoken, used and indeed “lived”. During “Fun and Practice” classes you will speak freely and have real conversations in Mandarin, with the support of a professional teacher to help you if you get stuck.

The classes are also a lot of fun, so if you are looking for a bit more relaxed way of studying these are a great option.

Any tips for booking a course?

There are a lot of courses on offer and they have very long names which can be a bit confusing at the beginning. Here some tips:

1) As long as you have your time zone correctly set under “Settings” it will show all class times according to your time zone when you click on a course, which helps finding the right class time wise for you.

2) There are four types of courses. Standard Courses that teach four hours of class per week, either Mon & Wed evening, Tue & Thur evening and Sat morning or afternoon. Intensive courses that teach two hours every day Mon-Fri either morning or afternoon. They are all offered in three different time zones: China, Central European and Eastern Standard. Depending on where you are this might be different for you

How does the Credit System Work?

Each credit is worth one Mandarin group class and three credits get you one Mandarin 1on1 class. Once you subscribe to a subscription you will be charged and immediately receive the credits. You can then use them for booking classes straight away. Once you have a subscription you can also buy additional individual credits if you need more, but it works out cheaper to get them in the subscription.

Your can use the credits for a whole month to make a booking for a class whenever you want. That class does not have to be within that month and you can use the credits to book classes for as far into the future as you want. Only the booking needs to be finalized within that month.

During the validity of the credits if you cancel a class more than 72 hours beforehand you will receive your full credits back immediately. If it is less than 72 hours you will not receive the credits back.

However, please still do cancel even if it is less than 72 hours ahead, as otherwise your teacher might spend an hour waiting for you not knowing whats going on.

A more detailed explanation you can fin on the LTL Flexi Credit FAQ page.

Can I cancel classes?

Yes you can cancel classes at any time by simply clicking the “cancel” button. As long as you do so either within 30 minutes of booking it (“immediate cancel”) or 72 hours before the class and the credit is still valid you will immediately receive your credit back.

If you cannot make it to a class, please always cancel them even if you will not receive your credits back. This will make sure that your progress is accurately tracked in “My Level”. Also your teacher will receive a notification so he/she will not wait for you unnecessarily. Teachers will stay online for the whole duration a class was booked and it can be a bit frustrating to spend 60 minutes in a Zoom meeting room and nobody showing up.

How should I book classes?

There are two different ways to structure your classes with Flexi Classes.

1) Follow a “traditional” fixed time course, where you follow a fixed time schedule, but have all the Flexi Classes flexibility to cancel, skip or make up lessons in case you have to miss a class or want to re-take one. Press the “Book a Course” button in the “Book a Class” section and choose the course that is right for you. You can book the whole course, a part of it or just individual lessons, this is all up to you.

2) Book classes individually the “Flexi” way. Under “Book a Class” book classes when they fit your schedule with complete flexibility whenever you are free. This is super easy and convenient but you will have to spend a little bit of time planning your classes and deciding which classes to book when.

How can I get a new or change my subscription?

Under “Credits” scroll down to “Change Subscription”, choose the subscription you want and press the yellow “change subscription” button below.

You need a working credit card stored under “My Billing” for this to work.

If you have a current active subscription nothing will happen at the moment. You will receive the credits and be charged for new subscription you chose when your subscription renews. You can find that date under “Renewal Date”.

If you currently don’t have a subscription the new one you chose will become active immediately and you will be charged and receive your credits immediately.

Studying FAQs

Is it better to study with the same or different teachers?

Experiencing different teaching styles is a good thing.

Also being able to listen to different voices and their pronunciations is great practice as in real life you will never just speak with one, but many different people.

When you just have one teacher you get very used to that one person, which also can feel very comfortable and encouraging.

However for learning how to communicate in the real world, challenging yourself to study with different teachers is the faster way to progress.

I like my teacher, when is she/he teaching again?

On the “My Classes” page under “Past Classes” you can see all classes you previously studied. Your teachers picture appears in the class card. Click the picture to get to your teachers profile.

Below the profile you will see a list of all future classes your teacher is currently signed up to teach. You can book one immediately by clicking it.

If none of them fit your schedule, keep checking back regularly as teachers keep signing up for classes as students book them.

However, don’t forget studying with different teachers is usually more effective than just one teacher all the time. It challenges you to hear and understand different voices in Mandarin. It also gets you used to different communication styles which is what you will need in real life once you hit the streets of Beijing.

How can I switch from Flexi Classes to a Full Course?

There is no need to do anything to switch between studying “the Flexi way” and book each class individually and following a Full Course.

Full Courses you can book on “Full Courses” and individual Flexi Classes under “Book a Class”. Prices, terms etc. are all the same. The only difference is that Full Courses will be all taught by one teacher.

Many students also combine a Full Course with Flexi Classes. You can study a Full Course and then book individual Flexi Classes to study a topic again that was a bit challenging or you missed for example.

Can I study always with the same teacher?

Yes you can. Press the “Book a Course” button in the “Book a Class” section and you will be able to choose from our 40+ different fixed time online courses. All courses are taught by the same teacher. Have a look which one fits your time. You do not need to book the whole course, but can also just book a part of it or cancel classes later.

For individually booked classes in “Book a Class” we will choose different teachers for you depending on which teacher is suitable for teaching this class and their time availability.

If you want to study 1on1 classes with the same teacher you can book a fixed time 1on1 class program. You will still be able to choose your preferred teaching time, but will have to follow a schedule and not have the same flexibility to cancel, re-book or change class times. If you have a preferred teacher, you can let us know and we will arrange that teacher, so you might have to be more flexible time wise as a teacher might also be busy, on holiday, have a sick day or just not available at exactly the times that you want to study.

We recommend to study 1on1 classes with different teachers in Flexi. Choose the topics you want so you can follow the curriculum while experiencing different teaching styles. For Tailor Made classes, tell us in your “I want to study” notes what you want to learn during this class and we will prepare accordingly.

Any tips for booking classes?

If you are booking classes individually:

a) Check “Recommended Classes”, these are lessons teaching topics that are either next up in the curriculum or you missed previously.

b) Keep your “My Level” up to date. Whenever you study a topic it will be automatically marked as “studied” on there. If there are topics you feel you already know and do not want to study anymore, mark them as “skipped” so they will not be recommended to you anymore.

c) Use the “All Topics” filter under “More” in the Book a Class filters section. You will only be shown classes teaching topics you either missed or 1, 5 or 10 topics ahead.

d) Don’t be afraid to re-take topics. Under “More Filters” choose “Include studied topics”. You will then be also shown classes that teach lessons that you previously studied. When learning Mandarin often the biggest problem is not learning new material but making sure you remember what you learned previously. Re-taking a class is a great way to refresh your knowledge and make 100% sure what you learned you really do remember. Often retaking an already class can actually get you ahead faster than studying a new one, plus the teacher, class mates and questions will be different, so it wont be the same class again.
