FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why do you offer such a big discount?
We want to offer an intensive full time studying option for people who cannot come to China.
LTL is one of the most established Chinese language schools there is, with a total of 8 schools in China, Taiwan and now Singapore, however, we only introduced our online classes last year.
That is why we are offering them at a 20% discount at the moment. This is particularly attractive with the very small group class size of an average of only 2 students per class.
What kind of technology do I need?
At the bare minimum, all you need is an internet connection and an internet-enabled device.
However, for best results, we recommend you use a PC with a webcam so you can use the interactive whiteboard and your teacher and classmates can also see you. It’s more interactive and fun when you can see each other and pretty much all students use webcams. We teach all classes via Zoom.
Which Chinese levels are available?
We offer university-style semesters at the levels A0, A1, A1+, A2 and B1.
In terms of how this compares to the HSK, this is either a Complete Beginner, HSK 1, HSK 2, HSK 3 and HSK 4.
Before the course you will do a free assessment test and based on your result you will be placed in a suitable course.
Why is a university online course a good option?
To study Mandarin effectively you need to study in a small class.
With an average of three students per class, the teacher will have a lot of time to help you with your questions and you will get a lot of speaking time.
You can progress very quickly with this program.
At the same time you do not need to travel to China and get a huge discount (60%) off the price of what a small group semester like this usually would cost in China.
What if I miss a class?
You can cancel your classes at any time.
If you do so at least 72 hours before the class, you can book another make up class at no additional cost.
If you cancel a class with shorter notice, we will send you the study materials and you can review the class yourself.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes you do get a certificate for the full semester AND for completing each HSK level.
How long in advance do I need to sign up?
It is always best to book as long ahead as possible, but due to the large number of online courses we are running, short term bookings are usually possible as well. Send us a message via the Contact Us button to check availability.
How can I pay?
You can for your online Chinese semester via bank transfer or credit card.
Payment is possible in Euros, USD, GBP, NZD, AUD, CHF, JPY, SGD and CND.
How do I sign up?
Contact your online study advisor via the contact button or [email protected], let us know which semester you want to sign up for and we will do the rest for you.
We always reply within less than 24 hours during working times and usually much faster.
What level can I expect to reach?
A complete beginner during one of our semesters usually achieves about HSK level 3.
There are some very motivated students who make it to HSK 4, but that is a minority.
There have also been some who only passed HSK 2, though with a very good score. HSK 3 however, is a very realistic aim because with the small classes, intensive course and our great online curriculum you will progress very fast.
If you start at a higher level then, of course, you can get further within one semester too.
Note: Achieving HSK 3 in a semester of course requires you to attend the classes and follow your teachers instructions.
Is class participation mandatory?
No, while this is a university style online course our students are actually very motivated adults who really do want to learn Chinese.
Everyone studying Mandarin online with us is interested in progressing as fast as possible and therefore is responsible for their own attendance.
Our students usually attend all classes, though if you are sick or just cannot make it one day, this is no problem and your teacher will give you homework so you can make up any lost classes in your own time.
I have more questions, who can I contact?
Just contact us via the contact button above and you will have a reply in your inbox within less than 24 hours.
When are the classes?
When your classes will take place depends on your time zone. With LTL teaching more than 120 Chinese classes online per day, there is always a course happening in your time zone.
Classes are taught between 8am and 5pm in your time zone, allowing for sufficient breaks in between classes.
For students with specific time requirements we can arrange tailor made solutions. Please contact us with your time availability, preferred starting date and current Chinese level. We can check class availability for you and let you know if this is possible straight away.
What is the average class size?
On average our classes have only two students.
This means each student will be able to talk and practice a lot during class.
Language progress is very fast during our online classes as a result – often even faster than for face to face classes.
Which study materials do you use?
All semester programs are taught following the LTL online Chinese curriculum.
Our curriculum has been developed for online teaching and will get you ahead quickly.
Have a look at a sample teaching pdf here.
In addition to the teaching materials you will receive audio files and additional self study resources for each class.
All teaching materials and other resources are already included in the course fee.
There are no additional charges for any online study materials.
How long does an hour of class last?
At LTL Flexi Classes an hour lasts exactly as long as it should: 60 minutes.
We strongly disagree with the “creative” ways how many schools nowadays make their programs sound more intensive than they are. Teaching lessons that are presented as “hours” but really only last for 45, 50 or 55 minutes. Added up over a semester these are significant differences in teaching time, which slow down student’s language progress.
Class, lesson, hour or whatever you want to call it at LTL it lasts exactly 60 minutes.
So that means with the Online Chinese Semester you get four times 60 minutes of Chinese language instruction per day Monday to Friday.
