HOW TO SAY TOGETHER IN SPANISH

The idea of “together” in Spanish can be expressed by using junto, junto a, and junto con, each with a differentiated meaning and purpose of use.

In this lesson we teach you how to use all of them, with sentence structures and examples.

USING JUNTO

Junto as an adverb

The use of junto as an adverb with the meaning “beside” is common in countries like Mexico.

However, this usage is informal or regional and is not considered acceptable or gentrified in more formal contexts, particularly in Spain.

See the comparative examples:

➡️ Non-standard or informal: Si trabajas con fuego, ten junto un extintor. (If you work with fire, have an extinguisher beside.)

➡️ Standard or formal: Si trabajas con fuego, ten junto a ti un extintor. (If you work with fire, have an extinguisher beside you.)

The use of junto as an adverb is less common and not recommended in European Spanish (Spain), especially in more formal speech or writing.

Instead, the prepositional structure junto a (together with) is preferred.

If used as a standalone adverb, junto remains invariable and does not require agreement in gender and number.

Trabajamos juntos en el proyecto. We worked together on the project.
Las dos familias viven juntas en la misma casa. The two families live together in the same house.

Junto as an adjective

When junto is used as an adjective, it translates to “together”, describing people or things being done together.

In this context, junto is usually interchangeable and synonymous with juntamente

When the word junto is used as an adjective, it must necessarily agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies.

For example:

Juntos
(masculine, plural)
Juntas
(feminine, plural)
Nos hicimos una foto juntos. Nos hicimos una foto juntas.
We took a picture together. We took a picture together.

USING JUNTO A

In Spanish, the use of the prepositional structure junto a (which in English translates to “close to”, “beside” or “nearby”) is the most common way to express physical proximity to a person, place, or object.

When expressing the idea of physical proximity, junto a is generally recommended as the standard in both formal and informal contexts.

Junto a is widely used across Spanish-speaking countries, in contrast to the informal and less frequent standalone adverb junto or other sparsely used constructions such as junto de.

The basic structure of the prepositional structure junto a to express proximity requires placing the phrase before the noun that indicates where or with whom the subject is located.

PATTERN

junto a + noun (person/place/thing)

Aparca tu coche junto al mío.Park your car beside mine.
Ellos están junto a la salida. They are next to the exit.

USING JUNTO CON

The prepositional construction junto con is used to express shared action or collaborative partnership

Junto con is used to describe an action that is performed or taken jointly with someone or something else and is equivalent to “together with” or “alongside” in English.

In contrast to junto a, which conveys the idea of physical proximity, junto con denotes a shared or collaborative action, involving multiple parties.

PATTERN

Subject + junto con + noun phrase (person/group)

Verb agreement with the prepositional phrase junto con:

The phrase junto con introduces a secondary participant who collaborates alongside the main subject.

In the case wherein the verb comes after both the main subject and the phrase junto con, it is considered more correct if the verb agrees with the primary grammatical subject, keeping it singular or plural based on the main subject, ignoring the plurality introduced by junto con

Even though junto con implies a plurality of subjects (main and secondary), standard grammar maintains the verb agreement with the primary subject.

Alex pintó junto con sus padres toda la casa.Alex painted together with his parents the whole house.
Nos fuimos de viaje junto con mis amigos a Canarias. We travelled together with my friends to the Canary Islands.
