HOW TO USE VIETNAMESE ADJECTIVES

Vietnamese adjectives are pretty easy to use once you understand the sentence structures required to form sentences.

We teach you 3 simple sentence structures to start using Vietnamese adjectives immediately.

SUBJECT + ADJECTIVE

You can add one or more adjectives behind the subject to make a statement about a person, an animal, a thing, or an event. 

PATTERN

Subject + Adjective

NOTE || Add “và” between 2 or more adjectives

Tôi đẹp I am pretty 
Anh ấy dễ thương He is cute  
Trời nóng nắngThe weather is hot and sunny

NOUN + ADJECTIVES

Add one or more than one adjective behind a noun to indicate more details about an object in an SVO sentence.

Subject + Adjective

For example: 

Tôi ăn tô phở nóng và rẻ I eat a hot and cheap Pho 
Anh ấy thích matcha lạnh và ngọt He likes a cold and sweet matcha 
Chị ấy không thích đầm dài và sặc sỡShe doesn’t like a colorful and long dress

To make a question with an adjective, you can use the structure below:

Adjective + “không”? 

For example:

Đẹp không? Is it beautiful? / Am I beautiful
Lạnh không? Is it cold? / Are you cold
Nóng không? Is it hot? / Are you hot

Lạnh không? Is it cold? / Are you cold

Nóng không? Is it hot? / Are you hot

How to use adverbs in Vietnamese?

You can add an adverb behind the verb to indicate a state or a level of an action

Verb + Adverb

For example:

Tôi hát hay. I sing well 

Anh ấy nấu ăn vào buổi sáng. He cooks in the morning. 

You can add an adverb behind or in front the adjective to indicate a level of characteristics. 

Adjective + Adverb

Đẹp hú hồnAmazingly beautiful! 

Lạnh tê táiFrozenly cold!
