Hidden Gems in Italy: Castelluccio di Norcia
Italian Hidden Gems || The blooming lentil fields of Castelluccio di Norcia
Hi everyone! Today we’ll talk about a tourist destination nestled in the heart of central Italy, waiting to be discovered by travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure: Castelluccio di Norcia.
While many may not have heard of this picturesque destination, it holds within its bounds a breathtaking spectacle, its blooming lentil fields. It is located within the Monti Sibillini National Park, a short distance from the Marche border.
The flowering of lentils on the plain of Castelluccio di Norcia gives Umbria’s visitors a unique view, especially during the first weeks of July. During these days, the plateau on the slopes of the Sibillini Mountains turns into a real fragrant rainbow.
Not only lentil seedlings but also poppies, gentians, daffodils, wild mustard, violets, cornflowers, asphodels, clovers, and many other wild grasses are blooming in an astonishing symphony of colors.

Castelluccio di Norcia || Where to go
To best enjoy the spectacle, we recommend the Pian Grande and Pian Perduto areas, near Norcia. We also recommend Monte Vettore.
The top of the plateau is occupied by the picturesque – and, by now, mostly touristy – Castelluccio di Norcia. Following the unfortunate 2016 earthquake, the few historic inhabitants of the village had to move to safer areas.
After the event, the road to the plateau was completely repaved, so driving would be a pleasure. If you go by car, park only in designated areas or along the street, provided you don’t block the traffic.
Coming from the south (from Norcia or Arquata del Tronto), you will first encounter Pian Piccolo. A little further on, you’ll see Pian Grande, the large plain at the foot of Castelluccio.
You’ll be able to see the bright colors of the flowers starting from Pian Grande: don’t stop where you see the first parked cars, but keep going until you get below the village, from here then walk into the plain.
You can also see the blooming of Castelluccio di Norcia from above, climbing up to the village. From up here you will have a fantastic view of Pian Grande. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to take beautiful photos.
From the plain of Castelluccio di Norcia you can also see a forest in the shape of Italy, on the slopes of Poggio di Croce, which was planted in 1961 to mark the first centenary of the Kingdom of Italy.
Castelluccio di Norcia || When to visit
So when is the best time to see the Castelluccio blooms? The flowering typically takes place between the end of May and mid-July. However, it is difficult to accurately state the best time to visit this place. Much depends on the weather pattern of the period.
On the official website, you’ll find updates as well as pictures of the last flowerings.
Fortunately, flowering typically lasts a few weeks. For this reason, we recommend consulting the news available online so that you can set off as soon as the fields are in bloom.
The best days of the week to go to Castelluccio di Norcia and see the flowering are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. These days are quieter, as there are fewer people and vehicles in the area.
Castelluccio di Norcia || What to do
Besides the flowering, the area is also well known for the various sports activities that can be done in the surrounding areas.
On the Sibillini Mountains, it is possible to go hiking, horseback riding, trekking, as well as mountain biking.
Some people, for example, try snowshoeing in the Sibillini Mountains, as well as rafting. Such activities can be done about a half hour from Castelluccio di Norcia, near Seravalle, in the Corno River, where it’s also possible to go for a ride in an inflatable boat or kayak or even canoe.
In addition to this, it’s also possible to embark on unforgettable experiences such as paragliding or hang gliding, to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Castelluccio area from above. Find out more on the Castelluccio di Norcia official website.
Furthermore, once you get to the Catelluccio area, you cannot forget to also try the typical products: honey, jams, cheeses, cured meats such as prosciutto di Norcia and coglioni di mulo (speaking of which, have you read our article about food with funny names?) and, of course, lentils.
We hope you’ve enjoyed discovering the enchanting beauty of Castelluccio di Norcia through this article. While it may not be as renowned as some of Italy’s more famous destinations, its allure is undeniable. Stay tuned for more fascinating insights into lesser-known treasures, and until then, happy travels!
