LEARN SHANGHAINESE ONLINE – THE DETAILS
Here is a summary of our online Shanghainese programs available to you. There are fixed class schedules for three common study times.
- AFTER WORK EVENING – The after work courses run twice a week, at three different time zones so everyone can get involved. The starting time is 7pm and lasts for 2 hours.
- WEEKEND – Weekend courses can run on either Saturday OR Sunday either in the morning OR the afternoon. You decide.
- EVERYDAY INTENSIVE – Our most intense set of fixed group classes that run from Monday to Friday, two hours a day in the morning or afternoon.

Is Shanghainese the same as Mandarin in general?
They are actually very different!
You can discover the key differences between Shanghainese and Mandarin in this blog post.
Generally the pronunciation and tones completely differ to Mandarin meaning a good Mandarin speaker probably wouldn’t have a clue when listening to Shanghainese.
Can I choose what I study?
For fixed group classes we follow our very own curriculum which we created.
However, if you wish to choose the content of your course, you can sign up to our 1-on-1 Shanghainese classes.

Do people still speak and learn Shanghainese?
Absolutely yes.
Although there is no doubt the number of Shanghainese speakers has dropped, given the strong push for Mandarin over the last few decades, Shanghainese is still taught to some level.
About 20% of the population of Shanghai can speak the local dialect.
