HOW TO COUNT IN VIETNAMESE

COUNTING FROM 1 TO 10
For now, let’s brush up counting from 1 to 10 in Vietnamese:

COUNTING FROM 11 TO 19
After mastering counting from 1 to 10, let’s read numbers from 11 to 19 by following this rule:
PATTERN
11 = 10 (Mười – Ten) + 1 (Một – One) = Mười một (Eleven)
NOTE || For number 5, we don’t read năm but instead lăm.

First, let’s learn how to read 20-30-40-50-60-70-80-90:

Then, we apply the same rule of composing to read numbers from 20 to 99.
NOTE
• When the digit “2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9” is followed by the digit “1”, we don’t read “1” as “một” but we read “mốt”• When the digit “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9” is followed by the digit “5”, we don’t read “5” as “năm” but we read “lăm”

COUNTING FROM 100 TO 999
First, let’s learn how to read 100–200-300-400-500-600-700-800-900:

Then, we apply the same rule of composing (from 1 to 99) to read numbers from 100 to 999.
NOTE:
• When the number has the first digit being followed by the digit “0” such as 101, 203, 806, 909, etc, the “0” will be pronounced as “lẻ” (not “không”)
• When the digit “2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9” is followed by the digit “1”, we don’t read “1” as “một” but we read “mốt”
• When the digit “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9” is followed by the digit “5”, we don’t read “5” as “năm” but we read “lăm”

COUNTING FROM 1,000 TO 900,000
The three last “000” digits, we read “nghìn“.
For example:

| 100,000 | 100 = Một trăm and 000 = Nghìn so we read Một trăm nghìn meaning One hundred thousand |
| 500,000 | 500 = Năm trăm and 000 = Nghìn so we read Năm trăm nghìn meaning Five hundred thousand |
1,000,000 = Một triệu
