However she has a secret kung fu master teaching her kung fu which gives her an ambition to explore whatever she wants in the world.
She steals a special sword and escapes from her wedding, planning to do whatever she wants in life.
The sword belongs to a big hero called Li Mubai. Li Mubai is tired of the world outside and that’s why he gives up the sword to show that he will retire.
However, because Yu Jiaolong steals the sword Li Mubai must try to find it.
The funny thing is that he finds out Yu Jiaolong’s master is the person who killed his master. He wants to revenge and he also wants to be Yu’s master.
What will happen?
- Will Li Mubai gets what he wants?
- Does he know what he wants?
- What will happen between him and Yu Jiaolong?
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Review: Main Characters
For our Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon review we are going to cover three of the main characters from the movie.
First up…

Yu Jiaolong 玉娇龙 yù jiāo lóng, is played by Zhang Ziyi.
She is a smart girl who started studying Wudang Kung Fu with her master secretly at the age of eight.
Ever since she began learning kung fu she has had a 武侠梦 wǔxiá mèng (martial arts dream).
Her kung fu is actually is better than her master’s because she studies kung fu by reading the characters and her master studies by looking at the pictures while sharing the same book.
She keeps this well hidden so that her master doesn’t know.
She is required to marry a man picked by her parents to strengthen her family’s power but she doesn’t want to.
One reason is that she has a secret lover called Luo Xiaohu 罗小虎 (虎 means tiger).
She decides to live the life she has always dreamed of instead of living the life her parents tell her to be.
She steals the sword and begins to be independent.

Li Mubai 李慕白 lǐmùbái, is played by Chou Yun Fat.
He is a martial arts master who loves Yu Xiulian deeply.
He had a close friend who was like a brother to him, Meng Sizhao.
Meng Sizhao was Yu Xiulian’s fiancé who died in order to save his dear friend Li.
He is tired of being a hero in the world outside and he asks Yu Xiulian to give up the sword as a sign of respect to the world. He plans to live a peaceful life with the Yu, who he loves deeply.
His main practice is known as Wudang swordsmanship.
Wudang swordsmanship emphasises desire, but he wants revenge for his master, he wants Yu Xiulian, and he even wants to take Yu Jiaolong as his apprentice.
Chow Yun Fat plays the contradictions of this character vividly.

Yu Xiulian 俞秀莲yúxiùlián, is played by Michelle Yeoh.
Yu is a woman who inherited her father’s export business.
She was asked by her parents to marry Meng Sizhao (Li Mubai’s close friend).
However, he died during a battle to save Li Mubai. Yu Xiulian fell in love with Li Mubai.
However, because of all the rules decreed by society she can do nothing about it and must hide her true feelings.
In Daoism, there is something known as Yin and Yang.
If Yu Jiaolong is the Yang and represents impulse, Yu Xiulian then is the Yin and represents the opposite, caution.
One line from Yu Xiulian for you to get a feel of her character.
我虽然不是出身于你们这样的官宦人家,可是一个女人一生该服从的 道德和礼教并不少于你们。
wǒ suīrán búshì chūshēn yú nǐmen zhèyàng de guānhuàn rénjiā, kěshì yīgè nǚrén yīshēng gāi fúcóng de dàodé hé lǐjiào bìng bù shǎo yú nǐmen
Although I am not from an official family like you, the morality and ethics that a woman should obey in her life are not less than you.
