HOW TO USE 从…到…

Well, the English equivalent of “从…到…” would be “from…to…”.

Just like “from…to…” in English,  “从…到…” can describe places as well as time.

HOW TO USE 从…到… FOR TIMES

In Chinese, we use “从…到…” to express a time interval, that is, from one time to another.

STRUCTURE #1

Subject + 从 + Time 1 + 到 + Time 2

STRUCTURE #2

从 + Time 1 + 到 + Time 2 + Subject

As you can see, the word order is optional: you can put the subject before or after “从…到…”.

The time words here do not necessarily need to be standard timings. They can be events, actions, or general timings instead.

cóng 2004 nián dào 2008 nián ,wǒ dōu zài shàng hǎi gōng zuò 

2004年2008年,我都在上海工作。

From 2004 to 2008, I worked in Shanghai.

HOW TO USE 从…到… FOR PLACES

In these cases, “从…到…” can be used to describe from one place to another. The sentence structure is quite similar:

从 + Place 1 + 到 + Place 2

cóng jiā dào xué xiào xū yào zǒu 20 fèn zhōng 

学校需要走20分钟。

I need to walk 20 minutes from home to school.
