The Sound 声临其境 Season 3 – What’s All The Fuss About

Today we want to welcome you to the world of Chinese reality TV with The Sound Season 3.

The program is called 声临其境 shēng lín qí jìng in Chinese.

声 means sound or voice, the English name for the program is The Sound. It is a competition show with celebrities.

It has three seasons so far and today our review is going to mainly focus on season 3.

The Sound Season 3: Competition Rules

Okay, first thing first, please allow me to quickly and briefly introduce what the show is about.

It is a dubbing competition between guests. Each theme has four guests and only one can win “best dubbing” in each theme. There are five themes in total

That means in total there are five of the best dubbers.

These dubbers (plus one best dubber selected by viewers) will compete in the final.

TIME FOR THE RULES – There are four Main Voices in the front of the stage during the whole show. They are always the same four celebrities and do not change.

Then, there are four Guests invited to the show for each theme, this means there will be different Guests for each theme.

These four are Mysterious Voices.

The Sound Season 3

They will be behind the scenes in the dubbing room.

This round is called Classic Voice.

After these four Guest celebrities finish the first round, the Main Voices will guess who they are and send a message by phone to the Guest they want to pair with.

The Guest who receives the most messages will show up first on the stage and pair with one of the Main Voices.

The second round is called Magic Voice. The Guests will be challenged with different situations such as tongue twisters.

After that round, the other three Main Voices will send a message by phone to the remaining three Guests and the one with the most messages will appear on the stage.

Then the two remaining guests will choose the other two Main Guests.

Every Main Voice must be paired with a Guest and they become a group.

That’s the first half of the program.

After that, the four groups will compete on stage by dubbing classic movies or TV show clips. The audience will vote for the best two.

Then the best two guests will do solo dubbing and whoever gets the most votes from the audience will win the best dubber in that theme.

There is a Comment Section where professionals are invited on to explain what was good about their dubbing and highlighting the subtleties of it.

The set up of the first two seasons was slightly differenet from this: The first section was “Classic Voice”, allowing guests to dub classic movies and animation clips. The second section was “Magic Voice”, where guests are challenged on stage to speak lines or dub.

In the last round of “Sound Show”, four guests would walk to the front stage and perform a co-prepared drama.

Guests who performed well in the first two rounds can come to the front stage in advance to interact more with the audience.

Finally, the audience voted for the “favourite voice”.

The Sound Season 3: Guests

There have been so many famous celebrities invited as a guest on the show.

Each theme has four guests.

Here we list four as an example with four different themes.

Guo Qilin 郭麒麟. He is famous for being a crosstalk performer and actor. He has been in many films such as Adoring and The Faces Of My Gene. He’s also been in the sports show Keep Running Season 4 and the Travel show The Way to Your Heart.

He dubbed several interesting characters in the show The Sound Season 3.

He even used a girls voice which impressed the audience quite a lot.

Gao Lu 高露. She is a very pretty actress. She has been in many great TV shows which include All Is Well.

What really impressed the audience is that she herself dubbed 3 characters in Despicable Me 3.

She also dubbed a great clip in Yanxi Palace.

Gao Lu is really popular in China and is a great addition to the show!

Jia Nailiang 贾乃亮, is famous for being an actor. He totally changed the audience’s impression of him in The Sound Season 3. Before people just thought of him as a comedic actor and never took him seriously, but after the show it was revealed how serious he can be. His voice has a lot of potential.

He himself dubbed the monkey king, Monk Sha, Zhu Bajie who are three characters in Journey to the West.

The audience were not only impressed by this but by all of his dubbing.

Liú Lín 刘琳 is a famous actress and actually so good that she is also honoured to be called an artist. One TV show she has appeared in is called Ode to Joy.

The audience, Main Voices and other professional dubbers commented that her dubbing performances are so much like watching the real shows that they can’t tell the difference between the dub and the original.

The Sound Season 3: Impressive Clips

To be honest, I am impressed by most of them! However, here I have selected some for you to enjoy whilst learning Chinese.

The first one is called New Legend of Madame White Snake. They dub episode 28. You can start from 27-30 minutes in, these 3 minutes is what they dub.

One sentence for you to learn :快放了我娘子kuài fàngle wǒ niángzǐ (Let go of my wife).

The second one is called Farewell My Concubine. The clip the guest dubs is one very classic scene.

The sentence for you to learn is in the blog we wrote. You can click on the name for this movie and check it out.

The third one is called Goodbye Mr.Loser. The voice the guest dubs is almost the same as the original voice in the show.

One sentence for you to learn is 您还活着呢？nín hái huózhe ne？(You’re still alive?).

There are also other classic clips such us one in The First Half Of My Life.

My suggestion is that you can watch several clips you are interested in and watch the clips over and over again, understanding that situation.
